Prepackaged legal plans are an innovative and cost-effective solution for a company’s legal needs in China. The prepackaged plan model is simple: A company pays a manageable annual fee. In return, it receives access to and on-demand services from English-speaking lawyers in China who are qualified to practice Chinese law.

Having a prepackaged legal plan is different than having a law firm on retainer. Companies that provide prepackaged plans in China are not themselves law firms. Rather, they are independent companies that form provider networks. Most providers offer standard plans; some will tailor plans specifically to suit the needs of the client. For services that are not included in the plan, most providers offer discounts off the network attorneys’ fees.

Having a legal plan removes much of the guesswork associated with finding good attorneys in China. The plan providers screen network attorneys by specialty, reputation, and skill. The plan provider will usually collect feedback from its clients on the local attorneys in the network.

Using a provider’s network gives the client access to a larger and more diverse range of legal experts than would be found at most small and medium-sized law firms in China. When a need in a new area arises – whether due diligence on a supplier or intellectual property registration – the client need only to contact the plan provider for a referral.
